Completely Out Of Touch

Written by , Posted in Election Time, Taxes

Two recent stories indicate just how clueless and inept is the Democratic Party.  First, we see that Democrats are punting on the issue of taxes:

Senate Democrats huddled behind closed doors for one hour on Thursday trying to figure out what to do about the expiring Bush tax cuts. With no consensus emerging, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., decided to postpone a vote until after the election.<

Why are Democrats refusing to address the pending tax hikes which will cripple the economy? Because they know there is majority support in their House caucus, and growing support in the Senate, for extension of all of the tax cuts. The American people want it, too. But this arrogant Democratic majority refuses to let such a vote take place.  They’d rather play class-warfare politics and prevent the tax cuts that would have the biggest economic impact from taking place than do what is best for everyone – across the board protection from rate hikes, including on crucial capital gains, dividends and death taxes.

The second story has to do with the Democratic response to the recently released GOP Pledge to America. Would they respond with a similar clear(-ish) enunciation of their positions, many asked? No. They say they’ll just run on their record.  Seriously.

If I didn’t know better I’d suspect they’re throwing the election.

How Far They've Come

Written by , Posted in Economics & the Economy, Taxes

This video by the Winston Group contrasting JFK’s rather sound economic understanding with President Obama’s sophomoric demagoguery really highlights just how far the Democratic party has lurched to the left.  All the old 60’s radicals and democratic socialists have worked their way up through the party structure, and now have control of the Democratic agenda.

The Benefits Of Party Homogeneity

Written by , Posted in General/Misc.

A recent Washington Post editorial discusses the apparent “Party purges” that some have observed in recent years.  Whether or not “purge” is the most appropriate word, I think there is a general truth to the idea that the parties have been slowly but surely sorting themselves out ideologically.  Southern conservative Democrats like John Breaux and Zell Miller are no longer welcome in the Democratic party.  On the Republican side the same can be said of northern liberals like Lincoln Chafee.

The editorial is reasonably even-handed in discussing the good and the bad of these changes, but I think it falls short in one important area.  A significant unidentified benefit of having parties with more clearly delineated ideologies is the increased ability for voters to replace bad policies with potentially better ones.

Assuming neither party has a monopoly on correct policy responses to various problems, when wrong policies are pursued and one ideology fails to deliver on a particular problem, having a clear alternative is preferable to two parties that are just a mix of both left and right.  In other words, if a governing party is already using a mishmash of liberal, conservative or any other policy solutions because they have a “big tent,” then it’s not altogether clear where the failure stems from when a policy flops.  But if a distinctly liberal or conservative party implements a policy and it fails, the source of that failure is easily identifiable.

The obstacle is our electoral system, which really guarantees the viability of two and only two parties, whereas the array of ideological choices on most issues. is typically greater. But just because we’re stuck with a two party system – one that encourages parties to be ideologically expansive despite all the hand-wringing over “purges” – doesn’t mean we have to have two parties with significant, and confusing, ideological overlap.  If you’re conservative, there’s really no good reason to be in the Democratic party, and no real benefit to the voters for having you there. The same goes for liberals and Republicans. If you’re a libertarian…well, pick your poison.

Enough With The Mindless Attacks

Written by , Posted in Election Time

I’m not usually one to complain about partisanship because I believe that ideological competition serves a valuable purpose.  But there comes a point when attacking every little minuscule thing the other side does just becomes stupid.  Case in point, the Republicans have picked Tampa as the location of their 2012 convention and Democrats immediately responded with an “attack” on the choice.

Democrats are preparing efforts to hammer the GOP over its reported selection of Tampa as the location of its 2012 convention, pointing to benefits the city and the state of Florida reaped from stimulus and healthcare reform legislation.

Democrats seized on an expected decision this afternoon by members of a Republican National Committee (RNC) steering committee that will recommend Tampa as the site of their nominating convention.

Give me a break.

Post-Obamacare

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

Gazing into my crystal ball, I see the world as it exists post-Obamacare.  The health insurance industry collapses.  Doctors are closing their doors.  Democrats are out of power.  I suppose you could say it’s a mixed blessing.

It is not hard to figure out what the health care reform bill will do to health care itself.  Using redistribution, the bill will increase consumption of health care.  At the same time, the additional burdens placed on doctors who can’t stay afloat on what Medicare pays will result in many leaving practice altogether.  Greater demand + dwindling supply = skyrocketing prices.

While this is happening with health care, health insurance will be stuck between a rock and a hard place.  On the one hand the federal government has just mandated the purchase of their product, delivering millions of new customers.  Maybe.  The problem there is that enforcing the mandate will be nearly impossible, if the courts don’t strike it down altogether.  Federal regulations also now prevent insurers from refusing coverage based upon preexisting conditions.  The market response, of course, is to charge higher prices to those with greater risk.  But many state regulations don’t allow price discrimination.  This means that health insurers are basically being forced to give charity.  Forcing insurers to take high cost customers + denying them the ability to charge them appropriately = bankrupt insurers.

So, from above we now have bankrupt insurers and skyrocketing health care costs.  Skyrocketing costs + bankrupt insurance = a broken system in which nearly everyone will suffer.

Another Day, Another Bribe

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements, Labor Unions

You can bet that any legislation which requires this many despicable, backroom deals is bad for America:

In their latest effort to pass a health care bill by any means necessary, Democrats have struck a “tentative deal” with their big labor allies to exempt union benefits from a tax on high value health care plans, CongressDaily reports.

If this policy is adopted, it would mean that there could be two Americans receiving the exact same benefits, but one American may be taxed and one wouldn’t, and the only difference would be one of them being a member of a union…

Venezuala's Public Option

Written by , Posted in Big Government

Does this reasoning sound familiar?

President Hugo Chavez on Tuesday announced a new chain of government-run, cut-rate retail stores that will sell everything from food to cars to clothing from places such as China, Argentina and Bolivia.

“We’re creating Comerso, meaning Socialist Corporation of Markets,” Chavez said at the opening of a “socialist” fast-food location for traditional Venezuelan arepas (cornbread).

“They’ll see what’s good. We’ll show them what a real market is all about, not those speculative, money-grubbing markets, but a market for the people,” said Chavez in his drive to change Venezuela from a market-based economy to a socialist one.

“We’re going to challenge all that junk food that just fattens people up,” he added referring to the arepa stand he opened to the public.

…”We’re going to defeat speculation. Private individuals in sales can still sell, but they’ll have to compete with us and with a people who is now fully aware,” Chavez said.

Chavez has taken the Democrats aborted plans for a “public option” in health insurance and applied it to, well, everything.

You have to feel sorry for the people of Venezuala as their country is destroyed around them by the failed ideas of the 20th century.

Why So Sensitive?

Written by , Posted in General/Misc.

Deranged moonbat Alan Grayson can dish it out, but he is ultra-thin skinned when it comes to criticism.  His webpage, congressmanwithguts.com, is dripping with obnoxious self-righteousness – a peacockian display of chest-thumping arrogance from the DC version of a common school yard bully.  And just as you’d expect from a bully, his response to constituent parody is dramatic and over-the-top.

Not everyone thinks imitation is the best form of flattery.

In fact, U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson of Orlando took such offense at a parody website aimed at unseating him that the freshman Democrat has asked that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder investigate the Lake County activist who started the anti-Grayson website “mycongressmanisnuts.com.”

Specifically, Grayson accuses Republican activist Angie Langley of lying to federal elections. His four-page complaint highlights the fact that the Clermont resident lives outside his district, but that Langley still uses the term “my” in “mycongressmanisnuts.com.”

“Ms. Langley has deliberately masqueraded as a constituent of mine, in order to try to create the false appearance that she speaks for constituents who don’t support me,” writes Grayson. “[She] has chosen a name for her committee that is utterly tasteless and juvenile.”

Did I mention that bullies tend to be the biggest babies when things don’t go their way?  Suck it up, bozo.
