No Benefits From Organic Food

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment

Reuters reports, “Organic food is no healthier, study finds:”

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said consumers were paying higher prices for organic food because of its perceived health benefits, creating a global organic market worth an estimated $48 billion in 2007.

A systematic review of 162 scientific papers published in the scientific literature over the last 50 years, however, found there was no significant difference.

“A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance,” said Alan Dangour, one of the report’s authors.

Organic food also provides little to no environmental benefit, as it requires more acreage to produce the same amount of food.

Law Of Unintended Consequences Strikes Again

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment

A study by San Francisco group Quality Planning finds that “owners of hybrid vehicles drive as much as 25 percent more miles than owners of non-hybrids.

They also get more tickets (which follows from driving more miles), are more accident prone, and have higher insurance premiums.

It’s not clear from the description whether or not their was an attempt to control for a possible selection bias in the study.  For instance, the demographics of people inclined to buy hybrids might differ in key characteristics related to driving from the population as a whole.

However, it’s highly unlikely that such a bias, if it exists, could explain a 25% increase.  Basic economics offers a better explanation: when something costs less, people will consume more of it.

We're All Gonna Die! Pt. 21

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment

Ninety-six months and counting until the destruction of Earth!

Capitalism and consumerism have brought the world to the brink of economic and environmental collapse, the Prince of Wales has warned in a grandstand speech which set out his concerns for the future of the planet.

The heir to the throne told an audience of industrialists and environmentalists at St James’s Palace last night that he had calculated that we have just 96 months left to save the world.

Did Al Gore lend him his trusty abacus?

Targeting Speculators, Again

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment, Free Markets

The democrats are dusting off an old enemy to trot out as part of their perpetual government circus act.  Oil speculators, come on down!

The Obama administration is also proposing an overhaul of financial regulation that would include tougher capital requirements for big banks, tighter regulation of hedge funds and a new consumer protection agency with broad power to regulate credit cards, mortgages and other consumer lending.

In the case of oil and gas trading, regulators made it clear that they were willing to move, without waiting for Congress to act on Mr. Obama’s overhaul, invoking their existing powers.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission said it would consider imposing volume limits on trading of energy futures by purely financial investors and that it already has adopted tougher information requirements aimed at identifying the role of hedge funds and traders who swap contracts outside of regulated exchanges like the New York Mercantile Exchange.

It’s not just democrats in on the act, this time.  Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy teamed up on the pages of the WSJ to call for more government when it comes to oil prices. This line of attack is based on pure economic ignorance.  I’ve responded to it in the past, so this time I’ll just point you to some bigger authorities than myself.

Come Get Yer Rhinos, Here!

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment, Free Markets

Animal rights groups are up in arms over an idea by the South African government to sell a couple hundred white rhino’s from Kruger National Park.

Up to 350 of the rare animals will be sold this year alone from the Kruger National Park under fundraising plans drawn up by the South African government.

Animal rights groups have criticised the move and warned it would undermine conservation efforts at the reserve, which is visited by 1.5 million tourists every year.

Steve Smit, spokesman for Animal Rights Africa, said: “The idea of herding up animals from a major wildlife reserve and selling them to private institutions is outrageous.

…Bosses started selling white rhino from Kruger in 2002 for around £12,000 (R150,000) each but have since sold an average of just 70 a year.

…Mr Smit added: “We have a huge amount of anecdotal evidence that suggests a large number of the animals that have been previously been sold have been shot by hunters – sometimes almost immediately.”

“Private institutions,” what horror! Mr. Smit’s concern that many of the rhinos will be bought by private hunters may well be true, and I object to any of them that might use drugs or tranquilizers when offering tourist hunters the opportunity to shoot them in controlled game parks.  I do not, however, object to their selling such an opportunity at all.

So long as parks are run by entrepreneurs (Kruger National Park is a concern in this regard, as it is operated by the South African government), then animals that are able to fetch a high price will remain safe from the threat of extinction.  Why would a park owner allow white rhinos (Kruger currently houses 4,500) to run out when there is a significant financial interest in ensuring their continued supply?  Allowing parks to sell large game, even for immediate killing, ensures the continued survival of those species and brings in the funds necessary to run the splendorous parks so loved by “animal rights groups.”

The real danger is that parks run by governments, rather than private groups, may not always be sufficiently motivated by long-term financial concerns to adequately protect such valuable commodities.  Examples of this are not hard to come by in Africa, where Marxist guerrilla governments slaughtered game to the brink of extinction to fund their wars.  But when they were convinced to grant hunting concessions to private owners – for a hefty fee, of course – animals fared much better.  Hunters who had a stake in running a profitable concession had strong incentive not to run out of stock.  They were also animal experts who understood how to keep a herd healthy, and they were vigilant in fighting off illegal poachers.  As far as I’m concerned, the more parks or hunting concessions that can be placed into private hands, the better.

“Just Say No” To “Just Do It”

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment, Legislation

I recently sent the following letter to the New York Times:

To the Editor:

Intelligent people like Thomas Friedman shouldn’t encourage their government to behave recklessly (“Just Do It,” Op-ed, July 1st). Despite finding ample reason to criticize the “cap and trade” legislation, he calls for it to be passed anyway. His reasoning is disturbing. We must pass this bad bill because, by golly, the world needs to see that we’re serious.

Don’t we have enough examples of what happens when Congress rushes through major legislation? The Patriot Act had to be revisited and fixed years later, the massive stimulus has not done any stimulating, and no one in Congress knows what’s going on with the TARP funds.

Chicken Littles always demand that government act now and do something – anything. But our legislature, via the deliberative and detached Senate crafted by our Founders, was designed to work much slower, and for good reason. “Just do it” is a fine slogan for a shoe company, but it has no place in politics.

Sincerely,

Brian Garst

UN Stumbles Upon Some Truth

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment, Free Markets

Coming as a pleasant surprise, the UN reported today that open trade and economic growth helps, rather than hurts, the environment.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, further liberalization of international trade can help combat climate change and support a low carbon economy, said a joint United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Trade Organization (WTO) report launched today in Geneva.

The “Trade and Climate Change” report stressed that an increase and opening of trade could have a positive impact on greenhouse gases emissions by accelerating the spread of clean technology and providing opportunities for developing economies to adapt those technologies.

Many of us have always challenged the “conventional wisdom” on economic growth – that it was destructive to the environment.  The reality is quite the opposite, as new technology is almost always cleaner than the old; so the faster new technology is adopted, the better.  If Barack Obama and the Democrats are serious about their goal of thwarting global warming, they should dump trade protectionism and their economically destructive cap and trade bill.

Professor Assails Government Climate Report

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment

The recent hysteria filled report released by the government on “climate change” is under attack.  A Professor of environmental studies, Roger Pielke Jr. sees a lot of bad science involved:

Imagine if an industry-funded government contractor had a hand in writing a major federal report on climate change. And imagine if that person used his position to misrepresent the science, to cite his own non-peer reviewed work, and to ignore relevant work in the peer-reviewed literature. There would be an outrage, surely . . .

…This post is about how the report summarizes the issue of disasters and climate change, including several references to my work, which is misrepresented. This post is long and detailed, which is necessary to support my claims. But stick with it, or skip to the end if you’ve seen the details before (and long-time readers will have seen them often), there is a surprise at the end.

We're All Gonna Die! Pt. 20

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment, Legislation

We’re All Gonna Die, White House edition:

Man-made climate change threatens to stress water resources, challenge crops and livestock, raise sea levels and adversely affect human health, according to a report released by the Obama administration on Tuesday.

The nearly 200-page document on global climate change — released by the White House science adviser and mandated by Congress — does not include new research, but encompasses several recent studies on the effects of global warming over the last half century.

In other words, the White House has rehashed the usual scare-mongering in order to drum up “support” for the upcoming vote on the Waxman-Markey, cap and trade disaster.  In a press release, Sen. Inhofe correctly noted “that despite millions of dollars spent on alarmist advertising, the American public remains rightly skeptical of the so-called ‘consensus’ on global warming.”

Right on cue, the White House’s propaganda arm (MSM) made sure you aren’t being fooled by the nice weather and, you know, general lack of anything approaching Armageddon.

With a cooler-than-usual winter and a mild temperatures leading up to the beginning of summer, global warming alarmists are finding they are losing steam in the debate. But “NBC Nightly News” won’t give up the fight.

…”This less-than-beach-like weather may have you wondering about global warming,” Thompson said. “This cold spell is a snapshot, just a couple of weeks. Global warming is something that happens over decades and centuries. So hang in there, summer and its warmth is on the horizon.”

That news of warm weather and theory of global warming was reassuring for Williams. “Glad to hear that. I was beginning to worry,” he said.

Lest you get too worked up, I am pleased to be able to inform you that our generous leader has a solution: money for the Chicoms!

U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change Todd Stern said that there was “no question” that China would receive both financial and technological assistance from the United States as part of upcoming climate change talks to be conducted in Copenhagen, Denmark.

“This is a developing country issue, which includes China,” Stern told reporters on Friday.  “I think there is no question that a Copenhagen agreement is going to have to include mechanisms to provide the financial flows and technological assistance to developing countries.”

We’re All Gonna Die! Pt. 19

Written by , Posted in Energy and the Environment

Lest we all get distracted by the nationalization of the American auto industry, it’s time for a reminder that humanity’s days are numbered. Impending doom threatens us all, as this feisty planet threatens to hiccup us pathetic mortals right off it. This time the messenger of the end of the world is none other than ABC’s “Good Morning America”.

The world is about to end, or at least that’s according to ABC’s “Good Morning America.” The June 2 segment promoted a new special called “Earth 2100.” The program follows Lucy, a girl born in 2009, and her dramatic story about how if we don’t take drastic measures immediately climate change will cause droughts, floods, mass migration, and starvation.

This may sound straight from a science-fiction movie, but “Good Morning America” went to great lengths to assure viewers this wasn’t science fiction and that by airing this series they were changing journalism. Bob Woodruff, host of the special, called making up what will happen in the future “a different kind of journalism.” The segment quoted him saying, “not a prediction of what will happen, but what might happen.”

Just in case you don’t believe ABC’s prognostication, we are now being told that global warming is the real culprit behind the disappearance of Air France Flight 447.  So now it’s not safe to drive or fly!  Next thing you know, global warming is going to cause horses to spontaneously explode.
