So Do It

Written by , Posted in Identity Politics

President Obama promised this weekend that he will end Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell:

We cannot afford to cut from our ranks people with the critical skills we need to fight any more than we can afford — for our military’s integrity — to force those willing to do so into careers encumbered and compromised by having to live a lie. So I’m working with the Pentagon, its leadership, and the members of the House and Senate on ending this policy. Legislation has been introduced in the House to make this happen. I will end Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. That’s my commitment to you.

I agree with the President.  The policy costs us valuable service members at a time when we need them most.  It’s a self-imposed burden that we can not afford.  But why is he talking instead of acting?  His majority is not going to get any bigger, and ought to be enough to pass what is in the end fairly simple legislation if he simply picked up the phone and told Congressional leaders to get it done.  As usual, he’s all talk and no substance.

Not A Joke

Written by , Posted in General/Misc.

I’m sure most of you reacted the same way I did upon seeing that Barack Obama had won the Nobel Peace prize: “This has got to be a joke.” I realize it’s cliché to claim that reaction to unlikely news, but in this case I literally assumed someone had fallen for a clever piece from The Onion.  Alas, that was not the case.

I know for a fact many are still perplexed, as the top search on Google for most of the day was “obama nobel peace prize for what.” For what, indeed.

The answer is fairly simple, though.  The prize is for being a dedicated statist. The Nobel Peace prize, you see, has never been anything but an ideological prize, a treat to re-enforce what European leftists consider positive behavior.

I think the awarding of the prize to Obama after so short a tenure in office is a gift for those of us who have long lamented the worthlessness of the prize. Questioning its worth is now a mainstream endeavor, as the prestige of the “Nobel” label has been wiped away to reveal nothing but a silly little trophy awarded by a sadly loyal group of adherents to a dying philosophy.

President Obama’s Speech To The Congressional Black Caucus

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

President Obama delivered yet another speech yesterday, this time on home turf at the Congressional Black Caucus.

There was nothing groundbreaking about the speech. Obama wrung his hands once again and blamed everything on Bush. He even reveled in this tired bit of blame-dodging, which he whimsically called “a stroll down memory lane.” After he finished waving his hands in this common but increasingly futile effort to distract from his numerous failures, he turned to health care.

One of the more odd assertions was a claim that, “we have been waiting for health reform since the days of Teddy Roosevelt.” Is that a fact? That certainly raises the question: exactly what was in need of reform in 1901, when there was no such thing as health insurance, Medicare, or HMO’s?

The only way to make sense of such an incomprehensible claim is to realize that “health reform” is code for government provision of health care. When properly understood, we realize that intellectual descendants of the Progressives really have been waiting for such “health reform” since Teddy Roosevelt. Indeed, they’ve been waiting diligently for big government Progressive Presidents, from FDR to Obama, to nationalize all the important industries in America.

The problem for the President is that he’s been selling something quite different, because he knows the broad public has not been waiting for any such “health reform” since Teddy Roosevelt.  And as more and more of the public discover just what the President means by “health reform,” they’re increasing saying, “no, we can’t.”

Obama Launches Trade War

Written by , Posted in Free Markets, Labor Unions

The first shots in a trade war – guaranteed to produce heavy economic casualties right here at home – have been fired by Barack Obama.  In order to secure a Pyrrhic victory for narrow union interests, President Obama has sent unarmed and ill-prepared consumers to the front lines.

Obama has slapped Chinese tire imports with a three-year tariff – at rates of 35 percent the first year, 30 percent the second and 25 percent the third. The justification for this action is a law passed in 2000, as part of the negotiations to Chinese admittance into WTO, that says the U.S. can impose tariffs if “a surge in Chinese imports damages a U.S. industry.”

A surge? Are Chinese tires storming the beaches of Florida?

Basically, some union official decided that China was selling too many tires and came whining about it to the U.S. government. All of a sudden it’s protectionism time.

Unfortunately, protectionism doesn’t actually do any protecting.  It doesn’t protect consumers who will have fewer choices at higher prices.  It doesn’t protect tire importers who will also pay higher prices which, when they necessarily pass them on to consumers, will cost them business.

It doesn’t even help the particular domestic industry ostensibly being protected.  Without competitive pressures, industry will grow in an inefficient and wasteful manner.  Numerous countries, particular in Latin America, have tried to develop economically by protecting domestic industries.  It has never worked.  You can no more protect an industry through tariffs than you can protect a child by locking him in a closet for twenty years.

Update: Daniel Ikenson at freetrade.org offer a much more detailed analysis.

The Response Is The Real Story

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

By now it’s likely that everyone has heard of Representative Joe Wilson’s outburst during President Obama’s speech. For those who haven’t, he yelled “You lie!” in response to the president’s claim that his health care solution would not cover illegal immigrants. On the facts Wilson seems to have the high ground. According to the Congressional Research Service, “H.R. 3200 does not contain any restrictions on non-citizens participating in the Exchange.” Democrats have so far defeated every effort to change that. The White House is trying to dance around it by highlighting that their hypothetical request for an ideal bill would prohibit participation in the exchange by illegals. But the rest of us are trying to deal in reality where the actual bill, which Obama supports and will certainly sign if it reaches his desk, contradicts his desires.

A Time and Place

Whether his accusation was correct or not, Wilson’s behavior was inappropriate. He was right to quickly apologize. While I have no objection with appropriately labeling liars, even if they happen to be president, the middle of a speech being delivered to Congress is not the time to do it.

Sure, this sort of thing is common in British parliament during question hour. I have no objection to it in that context. As a philosophical conservative I value tradition and so find both the British and American traditions, vastly different as they are, as entirely acceptable expressions of the social and political evolutions of their respective societies. But this isn’t Britain, and our president is not the equivalent of their prime minister. The British prime minister is a member of parliament, while our president is not similarly a member of our legislature.

Fake Outrage

Despite my belief that Wilson erred, I don’t consider this story to be near as important as some are making it. He made a mistake and apologized almost immediately. The sensible thing to do is acknowledge it and move on, but Obama’s defenders have insisted on milking it for as much as they can. In fact, the response has eclipsed the original outburst in its newsworthiness. The president’s more dedicated supporters have revealed quite a bit in their overzealous reaction, which includes a demand that he apologize yet again, only this time in person.

What is it they are so upset about? Democrats heckled and booed Bush during his State of the Union in 2005. Wilson’s language pales in comparison to that frequently lobbed at President Bush during and after his tenure, including that from elected Democratic officials. To understand their response it is necessary to realize that this is not just about Joe Wilson.  This is about their need to discredit all opposition to President Obama’s agenda.

Unable to defeat or even address the opposition on the merits, the strategy over the last few months has been to denigrate, trash and marginalize any public display of opposition. Tea Party activists are referred to pervertedly as “Tea Baggers.” They also apparently only oppose the President because he is black.

Demonstrations are Nothing New

Democrats are apoplectic over the idea that the strategies of the radical left, which they have applied – often to much success – for decades, are now being more tamely applied by some on the right. Groups such as Code Pink, who routinely make disruptive outbursts at inappropriate times, are embraced by the same Democrats who decry modern Tea Party activism. But unlike the liberal protests of old, there is no violence, rioting and mass arrests at the Tea Parties.

It takes real chutzpah to claim that we are seeing a new era of incivility after witnessing decades of these aggressive tactics. But that’s the case Democrats have decided to make in the hopes of distracting from the substantive objections to their health care boondoggle. They don’t actually believe that Joe Wilson’s outburst is so terrible, but they desperately need you to believe it.

Obama's Big Whopper

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

If you’re going to complain about your opponents telling lies, it’s best not to follow it up with a huge whopper.  Yet that’s exactly what President Obama did while speaking to his buddies at the AFL-CIO labor day picnic:

I’ve got a question for all these folks who say, you know, we’re going to pull the plug on Grandma and this is all about illegal immigrants — you’ve heard all the lies.  I’ve got a question for all those folks:  What are you going to do?  What’s your answer?   What’s your solution?   And you know what?  They don’t have one.   Their answer is to do nothing.

This is as bold and blatant a lie as they come.  Here’s Representative Price discussing one such solution in an op-ed today:

Republicans have put forth bold ideas that can transform American health care in a positive way — without a government takeover of medicine. Before the August recess, I joined with a number of colleagues to introduce H.R. 3400, the Empowering Patients First Act. Our solution is built upon the principle that when individuals are given control and ownership, we will achieve full access to coverage and see the entire system move in a positive, patient-centered direction. While we join in the national critique of the President’s misguided proposal, we also offer positive solutions for health care reform.

One need not look far to find alternative health care plans, even outside of congress. The Cato Institute, one of those critics of the big government plan that Obama slams, offers a comprehensive, free market approach.

Update: Reason offers to introduce Obama to Google, the use of which would highlight alternative proposals in unheard of venues such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes and The New York Times.

Suddenly, Saving Is Good

Written by , Posted in Economics & the Economy, Taxes

The Obama administration has consistently parroted the Paul Krugman view of economic recovery: spend, spend, spend.  Based on faulty Keynesian economics, this demand-side framework thinks too much saving is a bad thing.  According to this Krugman approved theory, there is a global savings glut and if America starts saving too then we’ll all be doomed!

This kind of Keynesian claptrap has dominated the administration’s economic thinking to date.  Yet now the President has inexplicably decided that saving is good, and therefore we need more of it:

The government is trying to make it easier for Americans to save for retirement, President Obama said Saturday, as he noted the toll the recession has taken on extra income and savings accounts.

One initiative will allow people to have their federal tax refunds sent as savings bonds. Others are meant to require workers to take action to stay out of an employer-run savings program rather than having to take action to join it.

If the President is serious, I have a simple suggestion to encourage greater savings in America: lower taxes and let Americans keep more of the money they earn.

Worse Than Indoctrination

Written by , Posted in Education, Government Meddling

The President’s address to the schoolchildren, and future Obama voters, has been heavily criticized for the creepy, cult-like overtones accompanied it by the White House recommended lesson plans. I’m more concerned with the fact that there are any such lesson plans at all than I am the speech itself.

The real threat is not that Dear Leader will start saturating the schools with his ugly mug. What ought to concern us all, however, is the prospect of centralizing classroom planning and content creation in Washington.

America has a long tradition of decentralized schooling, where local school boards determine the content and lesson plans of schools in their district. This insulates lesson plans from easy manipulation by political forces.

The fact that the lesson plans accompanying Obama’s speech are merely “recommended” is little comfort. The Department of Education is already doling out billions of dollars to local school districts. It would be quite easy for them to require, as the government has done in the past, the adoption of certain “recommended” changes as a necessary criteria for receiving such funds. Washington simply has no business coming up with lesson plans for America’s schools.

Cash For Your Economy

Written by , Posted in Economics & the Economy, Government Meddling, Waste & Government Reform

Looking to expand the incredibly wasteful, bureaucratic failure known as Cash for Clunkers, the brilliant Barack Hussein Obama brings you Cash for Refrigerators (and other working appliances you don’t need to replace)!

How long must this economic myth – that we can grow the economy by destroying things – persist?  Encouraging people to spend money replacing appliances that still work means they will have less money to spend on new purchases.

The point of concerning ourselves with the economy in the first place is to maximize growth and raise everyones standard of living.  This can only be done by producing, not destroying.  It’s not enough simply to create work for some people.  If that was all we wanted the government could pay them to dig holes and then fill them up.  The point is to have productive jobs.  Replacing working appliances is wasteful, not productive.

If your goal is to get from point A to point B, the first thing you have to do is get off the treadmill.

With his every scheme, this President shows that he expects us to trade in our economy for a shiny new government handout.  It’s guaranteed he won’t be paying out full value, though, since the government has to get its cut.  After all, destroying cars, refrigerators and appliances is hard work, and bureaucrats can’t be expected to do it for free.
