It's A Trap

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

Democrats have a brilliant new idea to force on you something you don’t want: pretending you could decline. I say it’s a trap:

Senate Democrats have begun discussions on a compromise approach to health care reform that would establish a robust, national public option for insurance coverage but give individual states the right to opt out of the program.

The proposal is envisioned as a means of getting the necessary support from progressive members of the Democratic Caucus — who have insisted that a government-run insurance option remain in the bill — and conservative Democrats who are worried about what a public plan would mean for insurers in their states.

How such a system would work is still being debated, according to those with knowledge of the proposal. But theoretically, the “opt-out” approach would start with everyone having access to a public plan. What kind of public plan isn’t yet clear. States would then have the right to vote — either by referendum, legislature, or simply a gubernatorial decree — to make the option unavailable in their health care exchanges.

Oh that’s perfectly innocent. We’ll force it on you, then make your politicians have to “deny” you “choice” in order to get rid of it. And even if they do successfully navigate that minefield of demagoguery, you’ll still get taxed for it!

For the states, this is purposely designed as “an offer they can’t refuse.”

Suddenly Unfunded Mandates Are All The Rage

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

When it came to campaigning against George W. Bush, unfunded mandates were despicable.  Now they’re just a convenient way to hide the costs of annexing health care:

The more we inspect Max Baucus’s health-care bill, the worse it looks. Today’s howler: One reason it allegedly “pays for itself” over 10 years is because it would break all 50 state budgets by permanently expanding Medicaid, the joint state-federal program for the poor.

Democrats want to use Medicaid to cover everyone up to at least 133% of the federal poverty level, or about $30,000 for a family of four. Starting in 2014, Mr. Baucus plans to spend $287 billion through 2019—or about one-third of ObamaCare’s total spending—to add some 11 million new people to the Medicaid rolls.

Not every state is hit equally, though. Some states have politically connected crooks to insulate them from the burdens they place on everyone else.

President Obama’s Speech To The Congressional Black Caucus

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

President Obama delivered yet another speech yesterday, this time on home turf at the Congressional Black Caucus.

There was nothing groundbreaking about the speech. Obama wrung his hands once again and blamed everything on Bush. He even reveled in this tired bit of blame-dodging, which he whimsically called “a stroll down memory lane.” After he finished waving his hands in this common but increasingly futile effort to distract from his numerous failures, he turned to health care.

One of the more odd assertions was a claim that, “we have been waiting for health reform since the days of Teddy Roosevelt.” Is that a fact? That certainly raises the question: exactly what was in need of reform in 1901, when there was no such thing as health insurance, Medicare, or HMO’s?

The only way to make sense of such an incomprehensible claim is to realize that “health reform” is code for government provision of health care. When properly understood, we realize that intellectual descendants of the Progressives really have been waiting for such “health reform” since Teddy Roosevelt. Indeed, they’ve been waiting diligently for big government Progressive Presidents, from FDR to Obama, to nationalize all the important industries in America.

The problem for the President is that he’s been selling something quite different, because he knows the broad public has not been waiting for any such “health reform” since Teddy Roosevelt.  And as more and more of the public discover just what the President means by “health reform,” they’re increasing saying, “no, we can’t.”

McConnell On The Bullying Of Humana

Written by , Posted in Government Meddling, Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

Mitch McConnell is firing back after the bullying of Humana for daring to inform their clients about what health care legislation meant to them. Needless to say, he’s not happy:

Republican House Minority leader Mitch McConnell blasted the investigation of Humana on Wednesday, calling it a “federal gag order” that seeks to silence a health provider that disagrees with the administration.  McConnell said he’s called for a complete legal justification of the probe.

“This is so clearly an outrage,” McConnell said on the Senate floor. “For explaining to seniors how legislation might affect them, the federal government has now issued a gag order on that company, and any other company that communicates with clients on the issue, telling them to shut up — or else.

“This is precisely the kind of thing Americans are worried about with the administration’s health care plan. They’re worried that government agencies which were created to enforce violations even-handedly will instead be used against those who voice a different point of view,” he said.

This Is Why You Don't Let Government In The Door

Written by , Posted in Government Meddling, Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

Some people wonder what the big deal is about letting government run a little insurance agency, or help people out by spreading some of other people’s money around.  Out of compassion, of course.  Well, here’s your answer:

Political intimidation has always been part of the current Congress’s health-care strategy: “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu” is tattooed on every lobbyist and industry rep in Washington. But Max Baucus’s latest bullying tactics are hard to believe by even these standards, as the Senate Finance Chairman has sicced federal regulators on the insurer Humana Inc. for daring to criticize one part of his health bill.

Earlier this month, Humana sent a one-page letter to its customers enrolled in its Medicare Advantage plans, which offer private options to Medicare beneficiaries. Humana noted that, because of spending cuts proposed by Democrats, “millions of seniors and disabled individuals could lose many of the important benefits and services that make Medicare Advantage health plans so valuable.” The Kentucky-based company also urged its customers to contact their Representatives. Pretty tame stuff, as these things go.

Mr. Baucus took it as a declaration of war. He complained to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the federal health-care agency, which on Friday duly ordered Humana to cease and desist. CMS claimed the mailer was “misleading and confusing” and told the company it has opened an official probe as to whether the mailer violated laws about how the insurers that manage Advantage plans are allowed to communicate with their customers, as well as other federal statutes.

And here‘s the actual letter.

Once government involves itself in any way, it will justify all manner unconstitutional restrictions on liberty in the name of protecting the political class in charge.  Private companies beware: you work with these thugs at your peril.

The Response Is The Real Story

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

By now it’s likely that everyone has heard of Representative Joe Wilson’s outburst during President Obama’s speech. For those who haven’t, he yelled “You lie!” in response to the president’s claim that his health care solution would not cover illegal immigrants. On the facts Wilson seems to have the high ground. According to the Congressional Research Service, “H.R. 3200 does not contain any restrictions on non-citizens participating in the Exchange.” Democrats have so far defeated every effort to change that. The White House is trying to dance around it by highlighting that their hypothetical request for an ideal bill would prohibit participation in the exchange by illegals. But the rest of us are trying to deal in reality where the actual bill, which Obama supports and will certainly sign if it reaches his desk, contradicts his desires.

A Time and Place

Whether his accusation was correct or not, Wilson’s behavior was inappropriate. He was right to quickly apologize. While I have no objection with appropriately labeling liars, even if they happen to be president, the middle of a speech being delivered to Congress is not the time to do it.

Sure, this sort of thing is common in British parliament during question hour. I have no objection to it in that context. As a philosophical conservative I value tradition and so find both the British and American traditions, vastly different as they are, as entirely acceptable expressions of the social and political evolutions of their respective societies. But this isn’t Britain, and our president is not the equivalent of their prime minister. The British prime minister is a member of parliament, while our president is not similarly a member of our legislature.

Fake Outrage

Despite my belief that Wilson erred, I don’t consider this story to be near as important as some are making it. He made a mistake and apologized almost immediately. The sensible thing to do is acknowledge it and move on, but Obama’s defenders have insisted on milking it for as much as they can. In fact, the response has eclipsed the original outburst in its newsworthiness. The president’s more dedicated supporters have revealed quite a bit in their overzealous reaction, which includes a demand that he apologize yet again, only this time in person.

What is it they are so upset about? Democrats heckled and booed Bush during his State of the Union in 2005. Wilson’s language pales in comparison to that frequently lobbed at President Bush during and after his tenure, including that from elected Democratic officials. To understand their response it is necessary to realize that this is not just about Joe Wilson.  This is about their need to discredit all opposition to President Obama’s agenda.

Unable to defeat or even address the opposition on the merits, the strategy over the last few months has been to denigrate, trash and marginalize any public display of opposition. Tea Party activists are referred to pervertedly as “Tea Baggers.” They also apparently only oppose the President because he is black.

Demonstrations are Nothing New

Democrats are apoplectic over the idea that the strategies of the radical left, which they have applied – often to much success – for decades, are now being more tamely applied by some on the right. Groups such as Code Pink, who routinely make disruptive outbursts at inappropriate times, are embraced by the same Democrats who decry modern Tea Party activism. But unlike the liberal protests of old, there is no violence, rioting and mass arrests at the Tea Parties.

It takes real chutzpah to claim that we are seeing a new era of incivility after witnessing decades of these aggressive tactics. But that’s the case Democrats have decided to make in the hopes of distracting from the substantive objections to their health care boondoggle. They don’t actually believe that Joe Wilson’s outburst is so terrible, but they desperately need you to believe it.

The Inhumanity Of Bureaucracy

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

If you think encumbering health care with a massive bureaucracy is a good idea, the British experience warns you to think again.

Doctors left a premature baby to die because he was born two days too early, his devastated mother claimed yesterday.

Sarah Capewell begged them to save her tiny son, who was born just 21 weeks and five days into her pregnancy  –  almost four months early.

They ignored her pleas and allegedly told her they were following national guidelines that babies born before 22 weeks should not be given medical treatment.

There are few things more inhumane than collectivization, in any form.  The reason left-wing totalitarian states in the 20th century were able to slaughter so many of their own people, while counting on the rest to turn a blind eye or even help, is because they had successfully collectivized morality.  When the primary moral unit is the collective, all manner of immoral action can be permitted and justified against the individual.

Remember this when you hear arguments for government health care based on collectivist morality.

Obama's Big Whopper

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

If you’re going to complain about your opponents telling lies, it’s best not to follow it up with a huge whopper.  Yet that’s exactly what President Obama did while speaking to his buddies at the AFL-CIO labor day picnic:

I’ve got a question for all these folks who say, you know, we’re going to pull the plug on Grandma and this is all about illegal immigrants — you’ve heard all the lies.  I’ve got a question for all those folks:  What are you going to do?  What’s your answer?   What’s your solution?   And you know what?  They don’t have one.   Their answer is to do nothing.

This is as bold and blatant a lie as they come.  Here’s Representative Price discussing one such solution in an op-ed today:

Republicans have put forth bold ideas that can transform American health care in a positive way — without a government takeover of medicine. Before the August recess, I joined with a number of colleagues to introduce H.R. 3400, the Empowering Patients First Act. Our solution is built upon the principle that when individuals are given control and ownership, we will achieve full access to coverage and see the entire system move in a positive, patient-centered direction. While we join in the national critique of the President’s misguided proposal, we also offer positive solutions for health care reform.

One need not look far to find alternative health care plans, even outside of congress. The Cato Institute, one of those critics of the big government plan that Obama slams, offers a comprehensive, free market approach.

Update: Reason offers to introduce Obama to Google, the use of which would highlight alternative proposals in unheard of venues such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes and The New York Times.

Kennedy’s Self-Serving Letter

Written by , Posted in Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements, Media Bias

The media is falling all over itself with Senator Kennedy’s selfless request that the Massachusetts legislature change the rules for appointing a successor to his seat in the event of his death, all in the name of ensuring passage of wonderful, free health care for all Americans.  Hooray!

It’s all bunk.

In 2004, Mitt Romney was the governor of Massachusetts.  If John Kerry had won the election, current Massachusetts law would have allowed Romney to replace him in the Senate.  Democrats couldn’t allow this and changed the law specifically to prevent a republican appointment.  Senator Kennedy supported this political gamesmanship, and that’s exactly what he is engaging in now.

The Dishonest Health Care Pitch

Written by , Posted in Free Markets, Health Care, Welfare & Entitlements

The White House mantra is all about “choice and competition.”  As I noted two months ago, the chosen strategy of the left on health care is to fraudulent adopt the language of freedom, while advancing a plan of control and restrictions.  Robert Gibbs says that the White House has the “goal of fostering choice and competition in a private health insurance market.” He even uttered the chosen words once every 8.7 seconds in a recent CNN interview.

No Choice

If you want choice, don’t expect any in this plan.  Want to purchase insurance that only includes coverage for care that you might actually need?  Too bad! Excessive government mandates won’t allow for plans tailored to your specific needs.  Want to forgo insurance and pay out of pocket? Too bad! An individual mandate prohibits that choice.  Want to get the same amount of money from your employer and purchase HSA accounts instead? Too bad! Government tax distortions make a dollar spent on your health care by your employer worth more than a dollar spent by yourself.

No Competition

If you want to see greater competition in health insurance, don’t expect to get it from this plan.  Want insurers to compete across state lines to offer the best plans possible? Too bad! State protectionism often makes this impossible.  Want a robust system where companies can offer different models? Too bad! Guaranteed issue and community rating rules in many states prevent companies from offering competing plans, or prices them right out of the market altogether.

Real competition and real choice is possible.  The way to get it is not through bigger government and more regulation, but by removing those barriers that government already has in place.  This plan does the opposite.  It is anti-choice and anti-competition.  Anyone who tells you otherwise thinks you are a sucker.
